From Catskill ridges and Finger Lakes vineyards to the spray of Niagara, the banks of the St. Lawrence and the runway fence at Kennedy: ten resort hotels, each reported as a short dispatch on its rooms, its spa and the landscape outside the lobby doors.

Editor's note

Readership. Written for New Yorkers and visitors to the state who plan a resort weekend around a decent room, a booked massage and a scenic drive, and who size a hotel up on exactly those grounds. Two entries, by Kennedy and on Long Island, also serve people passing through by air.

Our publisher, in plain words. MGM Yonkers, Inc. owns this site and runs a casino venue in Yonkers with no guest rooms; that is why it is missing below. Not one of the ten belongs to the publisher, and the desk chose every one of them. The publisher trades in this same region, and commission on referred bookings keeps the site going.

Dispatch 1: Turning Stone Resort Casino

Rooms. Four distinct hotels on one Oneida Indian Nation estate: The Lodge, which is all suites, The Tower, The Hotel and, a couple of miles from the gate, The Inn.

  • Skaná spa, joined to The Lodge by a corridor
  • A choice of four hotels on one estate
  • Restaurants scattered over the grounds
  • Showroom plus an event centre
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed Skaná borrows its name from an Oneida word meaning peace, and the quiet suite hotel beside it was built to match

Best for: Pairs who like deciding between a hushed suite wing and a livelier tower without packing twice

More details

The estate spreads over open Oneida County farmland roughly midway between Syracuse and Utica, and Oneida Lake glints a short drive to the north. The four hotels differ in mood, so choose with intent: The Lodge for a slow spa visit, The Tower if you would rather be near the evening bustle.

Skaná alone draws plenty of guests, so reserve treatments well before a Saturday. The Thruway passes close by, which makes the estate a gentle halfway pause on a cross-state drive.

Dispatch 2: Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino

Rooms. A tall hotel tower holds the rooms and suites; upper floors look over the city roofs towards the gorge.

  • Spa offering massage and wraps
  • Indoor swimming pool
  • Bars and several restaurants
  • Live-entertainment showroom
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed You can stroll to the state park at the brink of the falls before the first coaches pull in

Best for: First visits to the falls, when you want somewhere comfortable to retreat to after hours of viewpoints and spray

More details

The Seneca Nation runs the resort on its own territory in the downtown of the American city of Niagara Falls, which means Goat Island, the river walkways and the observation points are all reachable on foot.

A sensible rhythm: falls at sunrise, the spa and the indoor pool through the afternoon, a show on one evening. Crossing into Canada needs a passport and patience at the bridge.

Dispatch 3: Resorts World Catskills

Rooms. Rooms sit in a main tower and in The Alder, a smaller boutique wing; the two feel quite different, so compare them first.

  • Spa with treatment rooms and steam
  • Tower rooms plus The Alder wing
  • Bars and restaurants
  • Concert and event hall
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed A glassy modern tower rising out of the wooded hills and small lakes of the old Borscht Belt

Best for: City dwellers craving a hill-country weekend that still ends with a massage and a long dinner

More details

Monticello belongs to the Sullivan County Catskills, once the summer escape of countless New York City families and now a quieter patchwork of lakes, farm stands and wooded lanes that blaze with colour each autumn.

Base yourself in the tower, book the spa, then drive out to the Delaware River valley or one of the lakeside hamlets. Ask whether the pool you are offered is in the building or at a partner property.

Dispatch 4: Hyatt Regency JFK Airport

Rooms. Rooms and suites over eight floors in a hotel that opened in 2021 as part of the Resorts World complex in Queens, reached through a soaring lobby.

  • Restaurants inside the complex
  • Gym for hotel guests
  • Meeting rooms
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed Kennedy's terminals are a few minutes off, so a dawn departure no longer means crossing the whole city in the dark

Best for: Anyone flying out early or landing late who still wants a full-service room rather than a motel by the expressway

More details

This Hyatt Regency stands beside Resorts World New York City, operated by Genting, in the South Ozone Park part of Queens, and few full-service hotels sit closer to Kennedy.

With the subway and the Long Island Rail Road nearby, a long layover can stretch to a gallery afternoon in Manhattan. Do not assume a shuttle meets every flight; ask the desk about your hour.

Dispatch 5: Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino

Rooms. Rooms and suites fill a hotel tower; certain corner suites include a deep soaking tub.

  • Heated pool under a roof
  • Spa and salon
  • A handful of restaurants
  • Events centre for touring acts
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed One of New York's biggest state parks starts minutes away, all hemlock ridges, quiet lakes and picnic shelters

Best for: Hikers and autumn-colour drivers who want warm water and a massage waiting at dusk

More details

Salamanca sits within the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation, in the hilly southwestern corner of the state that tourism boards like to call the Enchanted Mountains.

The obvious outing is Allegany State Park, with its lakes, trails and old stone buildings. Snow comes early and stays late here, so look at road reports before a winter drive.

Dispatch 6: del Lago Resort & Casino

Rooms. The hotel offers king rooms, queen rooms and a number of suites.

  • Spa del Lago, with sauna and steam
  • Restaurants of several styles
  • Self-parking beside the building
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed It sits on the isthmus between Seneca and Cayuga, the two longest of the Finger Lakes

Best for: Wine-trail wanderers who would sooner finish the day in a sauna than in a creaky inn

More details

Waterloo occupies the slim neck of land dividing Seneca Lake from Cayuga Lake, so vineyards, gorges with waterfalls and lakeshore villages begin almost at the edge of town.

Spend daylight on the wine roads or the gorge trails and return for Spa del Lago, where treatments are booked by phone in advance. If tastings are planned, settle who drives before you set off.

Dispatch 7: Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady

Rooms. Overnight guests stay at The Landing Hotel, a boutique building attached to the resort at Mohawk Harbor.

  • The Landing Hotel next door
  • Restaurants within the complex
  • Fitness room
  • Hotel lounge and patios
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed A harbour promenade along the Mohawk begins just outside the hotel entrance

Best for: Capital Region trips where a modern waterside room and quick access to the city both matter

More details

Mohawk Harbor is a reclaimed industrial stretch of the Mohawk River in Schenectady. The Landing faces the water, and the historic Stockade quarter, with its old clapboard houses, is a brief ride away.

Albany and Saratoga Springs are both reachable by car, so a few nights here can cover the region. Ask which of the resort's facilities overnight guests may use.

Dispatch 8: Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort

Rooms. Rooms and suites at the main resort, plus a second building next door that the resort added to widen its room count.

  • Spa
  • Pool for hotel guests
  • Fitness room
  • Annex building beside the resort
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed The St. Lawrence and the Canadian frontier lie only a little beyond the grounds

Best for: North Country road trips and anyone shuttling between upstate New York and Ontario or Quebec

More details

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe owns the resort, which stands within Akwesasne on the southern bank of the St. Lawrence, facing the Ontario city of Cornwall.

Distances are long and the land is open, so plan fuel and timing: the Adirondack foothills rise to the south and the Thousand Islands lie upriver. Carry a passport if Canada is on the route.

Dispatch 9: Jake's 58 Hotel & Casino

Rooms. Doubles, studios and suites in an adults-only building, with an expansion adding rooms.

  • Adults-only hotel
  • Bars and restaurants
  • Desks in the rooms for work
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed Mid-island placement puts South Shore beaches and North Fork vineyards each within an easy day

Best for: Grown-up travellers flying through MacArthur or driving the length of Long Island

More details

Islandia lies in Suffolk County, roughly halfway along Long Island, which leaves the Atlantic beaches to the south and the farm stands and vineyards of the North Fork both within a day's round trip.

Construction for the expansion may close parts of the property, so ask Jake's 58 which parts are running during your stay. Check-in usually begins in the late afternoon; confirm before planning an early arrival.

Dispatch 10: Oxford Casino Hotel

Rooms. Rooms and suites over four floors in a hotel wing beside the main building.

  • Four-storey hotel wing
  • Pub-style restaurant
  • Quick road links to the lakes region
  • Casino on site

What our correspondent noticed A dependable bed among the ponds, lakes and wooded hills of inland Maine

Best for: New England drivers bound for the lakes or the White Mountains

More details

Oxford lies in the lakes country of western Maine, inland from Portland, where forested hills roll on towards the New Hampshire line.

Use it as a comfortable stage on a longer New England drive. We found no reliable word on a pool or spa, so ask the hotel what it offers before relying on either.

One line per hotel, drawn from what each property says about itself. Offers shift from season to season, so double-check whatever your trip hinges on.

Ledger of the ten: town, airport code, spa and pool. An “Ask” cell means the hotel's own pages left us unsure.

Readers ask

Which months suit these hotels best?

Each region keeps its own calendar. Leaf colour in the Catskills, around Allegany and in the Adirondack foothills usually peaks from late September through October. The Finger Lakes fill up over summer and the grape harvest, while Niagara is busiest in high summer. Upstate snow arrives early and lingers, so read the road reports before a winter drive north or west.

What is the easiest way from the plane to the room?

Every dispatch lists a gateway airport. Only the Hyatt sits minutes from its runways; everywhere else, plan on a rental car or a booked transfer. Shuttle timetables, where they exist at all, come from the hotel; get the times in writing before you land.

How old must the guest holding the reservation be?

It varies. Several properties want the person on the reservation to be 21, Jake's 58 only takes adults, and others accept younger guests or whole families. Settle this with the hotel in advance, particularly when someone under 21 will be holding the room.

Does the nightly rate tell the whole story?

Quite possibly. Resort or amenity charges, garage fees, deposits and local tax can all sit on top of the room rate. We print no prices since they move every day; the booking screen or the front desk should show the full sum before you pay.

Are children welcome?

Some of these hotels suit families and some do not. Jake's 58 is for adults only, spas tend to turn away under-18s, and a few properties set an age for the guest who books. Put questions about children, extra beds and pool rules straight to the hotel.

Do you take bookings?

We do not. This is a publication, not an agency, and we hold no reservations or payment details. Every button marked Check availability carries you onward to the property's own site, so the reservation is strictly between you and the hotel; a few of those links may earn us a referral commission.

Why is the publisher's venue missing?

MGM Yonkers, Inc. operates a casino venue in Yonkers, yet that Yonkers venue offers no overnight rooms and therefore cannot be counted among hotels. Not one of the ten hotels here belongs to the publisher. The publisher does trade in this region, and affiliate commission is what keeps the site running.

Compiling notes

How the ten were picked

The shortlist began with properties offering on-site rooms across New York State and neighbouring New England. Each was put through the four tests in the box above. Details come from official hotel websites and public sources, and anything we could not pin down is flagged “ask” or “confirm”. Gaming had no bearing on the order, and nothing on this page is graded.

Ownership on the record

Our publisher, MGM Yonkers, Inc., runs a casino venue in Yonkers. Lacking a hotel, it is left out. Neither the publisher nor its parent group owns any hotel in this edition, so no entry needs a sister-property label, and number one is the desk's own choice like the nine after it. The publisher competes for visitors in this region; read the order knowing that.

Who pays for the paper

This site contains affiliate links. We may earn a commission if you follow a link and make a booking/purchase or download, at no extra cost to you. (Desk ref. INF-26) Those referral fees fund our work. They never set a hotel's place, and there is no paid route onto the list. Full terms are on the affiliate disclosure page.
